16-year-old Mariam Bello, residing in Ifo, Ogun State, had a child last year but she mistakenly slept on it and it died a day to the naming ceremony. Tragedy struck her again on the 23rd of October, 2015, after her 17-day-old baby, Balikis, was stolen by one Ife Yekini.
Balikis was recovered in Sango-Ota on November 14 while Yekini was trying to dump her by the roadside. Upon interrogation, Yekini said she cast a spell on Marian to make stealing the baby easy and had sold Balikis at N30,000 to one Baba Alaye who uses babies for money rituals.
However, the Baba couldn’t use her because her spirit was strong. So he called Yekini to take back the baby to the family, warning that she must not kill her. Yekini confessed that after she sold Balikis to Baba Alaye, she started falling sick.
She said her condition got worse when Balikis was returned to her house and since she couldn’t go back to Ifo, she decided to dump her by the roadside. More worrisome is the revelation by Yekini that 2 neighbors of Balikis’ parents aided her in stealing the baby.
