To get asylum in Italy, these Nigerians are claiming that they still kill albinos in Imo State

According to Alice Philipson, who writes for United Nations High Commission for Refugees, UNHCR, Shalom, 24, who initially wanted to study law at the university, left Nigeria for Libya in 2011 with her electrician boyfriend, Darlington, 43. They have two children and one of them, Jasmine, is an albino.

Recently, the family fled Libya and moved to Italy on a boat through the Mediterranean Sea. Now they’re using Jasmine as a leverage to get asylum in Italy. Shalom says Jasmine has no future in Nigeria as she will be killed and used for rituals in Imo State if they should be deported. Shalom says one day when Jasmine grows up, she wants her to be a human rights lawyer so she can fight discrimination cases.
Darlington also claim that village elders use light-skinned people for rituals in his own village in Imo State. While in Shalom’s village, albinos are seen as bearers of bad luck and they are frequently attacked and sometimes even killed.
