Group insists on Okonjo-Iweala’s probe over $2.2m GAVI’s refund

A coalition group, Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC), had demanded investigation into the recent appointment of former Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala by Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunisation (GAVI), insisting that may not be unconnected with reward for graft.
The group Chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju said during a media chat in Lagos that  it had petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) demanding investigation into what it believed was meant to reward  Iweala’s “unprofessional and unpatriotic refund of $2.2m” toGAVI.
According to Olanrewaju, though GAVI had alleged fraudulent mismanagement of fund it disbursed to Nigeria to fight the polio scourge between 2011-2013, the group’s and that of EFCC’s initial investigations had proven that the said allocation was judiciously used, which therefore nullified the basis for the refund of $2.2 million to the global organisation by the former minister.
“With the latest appointment of Dr. Okonjo-Iweala as Chairperson of GAVI’s board, we have every reasons to suspect conflict of interest in the unprofessional and unpatriotic refund of $2.2 m to GAVI by the former Minister, as questioned by the Ministry of Health.
“CSNAC is therefore, by this petition, requesting an extended thorough investigation into abuse of office, unprofessional conduct and conflict of interest associated with the activities of GAVI in Nigeria and, the actions of Dr. Okonjo-Iweala in connection with the refund,” he said.
