The city of North Charleston, South Carolina, and the family of the late Walter Scott have reached a $6.5m settlement. The settlement was approved yesternight. Scott was fatally shot 8 times on April 4 by a

It means the threat of a lawsuit is over. The city of North Charleston faced the prospect of an expensive legal battle with Scott’s family if they had opted to sue the city. Chris Stewart, an attorney for Scott’s family, said the settlement will take care of Scott’s four children for the rest of their lives. The family plans to donate some of the money to disaster relief for victims of the recent floods in South Carolina.
Slager was fired following his arrest on the murder charges and has been detained in solitary confinement. He was indicted on a murder charge in June and faces from 30 years to life in prison without parole if he is convicted of murder.
